Shaq and Olajuwon’s Game 1 battle in the 1995 NBA Finals deserves a deep rewind

  • The 1995 Finals had a ton of star power - a very young Shaq and Penny for the top seeded Orlando Magic, Hakeem and Drexler having a mini Phi Slama Jama reunion in Houston, and Horace Grant's extremely awesome rec specs. And while the series didn't deliver as a whole, Game 1 was a roller coaster, if a roller coaster could go off the tracks because of four missed free throws in a row.

In hindsight shaq would've been better off shooting the 4 straight FT!

2:02 Penny's name is spelled "Anfernee" but it is pronounced like "Anthony".

Drexler (95) and Maxwell (94) were excellent, but not as good as kobe (00-02) or Wade (06).

Dream would dominate in any era including this one, because of his versatility.

Lol Jordan went back to 23 in Game 2? That's petty.

Nick was one of my favorite players. He even said himself he never got over Game 1. Such a shame that 4 free throws defined his career.

I took a philosophy class in college a semester or two ago and he made a reference to Hakeem. These are the cliff notes but he talked about how people in Houston would put Hakeem up there with the best of all time and be alone in doing so. The moment I heard it I thought it was a terrible example. You ask anyone that grew up in the 80s or 90s they will tell you honest to god how great he was.

Hakeem is a top 5 all-time. But I feel like I had to read a copy of the Economist while playing chess and Texas Hold 'em, enduring a four-color back tat depicting a Monet Lily pad pond and watching The Fog of War documentary with French subtitles on a unicycle in order to get there.

The Dream still is the most skilled center still to this day and pretty much no one can even claim otherwise. You have to remember that even players like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James have worked in Hakeem's gym during the summers to learn the post game from the most skilled center of all time!

Olajuwon may not have won as much as Kareem, Russell or Shaq did but he was still the most skilled, versatile and fluent of all of them. Kareem had his sky hook and was dominant but he was not as skilled or fast as Hakeem was. Russell did win the most but offensively no one can compare him to Hakeem. Shaq had size but otherwise nothing else against Olajuwon. Shaq actually has admitted Olajuwon was the only one who he could not break or get into one's head.

For me Olajuwon is the greatest center of all time and the 4th best player of all time just behind Jordan, Magic and Bird.

He clearly compensated on the 2nd two for the 1st two. He also rushed the very last one. He shot that free throw so fast. Nick was a solid NBA player but that 1st miss clearly got in his head. And after those 4 free throw misses he was never the same player and he struggled badly at the line the rest of his career. Can't help but feel for the guy.

At the time, both Nick Anderson and Gary Payton were my favourite players in the NBA. After this game, only Gary stood. Nick never redeemed himself in my eyes and I never really liked or followed him again.

I watched Hakeem’s entire career, year after year and this seems like yesterday. Too bad we didn’t meet the Bulls though. That would have been one for the ages. And yeah, we could have beat them, just like Orlando did.
